Danny Manus, Kittens and Characters

I’m constantly meeting people who prove the six-degrees-of-separation theory. Danny Manus is one of those people. As a newbie screenwriter in 2008, I pitched him, unsuccessfully I may add. But there was something about him I liked. He was so damned brutally honest.

See how gentle he’ll be with your characters!

A few years later, I sat at a lunch table with him at a pitching event and ended up giving him my dessert. Get your minds out of the gutter, not that kind of dessert! We didn’t talk about business. We just chatted. I got to enjoy his humor and see a different side of him. Turns out, he went to Ithaca College with one of my dearest friends, Alie Flierl, and I went to Cornell. Ithaca really is the center of the Universe.

The day I pitched Danny back in 2008, who would ever have guessed I’d be the Editor of Script Magazine, and he one of my talented contributors. See, this is why you should always be nice to people. You never know what the future holds…

If you haven’t read Danny’s popular piece in Script about writing female characters, you need to stop right now and read it:

So, why am I talking about Danny Manus? Because as a screenwriting consultant and former executive, he has fantastic insights into screenwriting, marketable concepts, solid writing, pitching, and character development. Plus he has a cat, despite being highly allergic. I dig that.

If you’re a screenwriter, you understand that creating compelling characters is essential for not only writing a great story, but also for attracting talented actors. Danny is teaching a 4-week class, starting September 26th, that is a must for all writers struggling with bringing their characters to a new level.

Check it out. See what you think. For me, my stories are all about characters. As many of you know, I like to stick them on a therapy couch and dive into their brains. It’s my favorite part of writing. If readers don’t find your characters fascinating, they won’t care enough to follow their journey for 110 pages. That’s the truth.

Spread the word and share the discount code with your friends. I promise, Danny will teach you amazing things all while entertaining you like none other. A true pro, with heart.
